Wild About Orchids - 19th Australian Orchid Council Conference and Show - Perth.

“Wild about Orchids” was the theme for the 19th AOC. The event was held at Crown Perth (formerly Burswood Entertainment Complex), a first class centre with all the facilities that once could wish for in the vibrant city of Perth. The timing of the show also coincides with the start of spring and welcoming the arrival of wild flowers.
The main ballrooms and associated foyer areas were brightened with the display of orchids, floral art, Ikebana and photos for the 19th AOC (Australian Orchid Council) Conference and Show.
The event is held every three years and it is rotated among the various states of Australia. The national exhibition showcases colorful orchids as well as gardening equipment and growing materials.  The exciting event was boosted with outstanding speakers to excite both the new and the most experienced growers.
The Grand Champion of the Show was awarded to Lycaste Abou Sunset Abou.  This hybrid was registered in 2008. This plant also won the Best Miscellaneous hybrid and Champion hybrid categories. Two flowers on 2 inflorescences beautifully displayed on a plant of 8 pseudo bulbs, three with foliage, grown in a 15-cm pot; sepals heavily and evenly overlaid wine; petals darker wine, evenly overlapped and the lip very dark wine.

Bulbophyllums "in-situ"

These two Bulbophyllums and a Dendrobium that were found flowering in one of our public parks. They were placed on the trees by the National Parks Board as a form of reintroducing some of the species that once commonly grew here. The three flowering plants are Bulb vaginatum, Bulb medusae and Den leonis. I gathered that these were placed there about a year ago. and here they are happily flowering away. They must be happy with their new homes.

Bulbophyllum cremenatum - Pigeon Orchid

Dendrobium crumenatum:
The common name for this orchid is "Pigeon Orchid". It is probably one of the most common orchids species in South East Asia.
I used to see them when I was a  child and it disappeared for sometimes due to urbanization. Thanks to our National Park in reintroducing them  to where they should be. Nowadays you can find them in the large trees along the roads across the Island. Some clumps are as large 4 to 5 feet across.
The recent cool spell causes a drop in temperature has prompted them to bloom across the Island. What a sight behold to see these hanging flowers from forks of the trees. The  plant produces many fragrant flowers but sadly to say they do not last. Typically it is between 1 to 2 days.

A solitary plant that was found outside my house. This plant is likely to be a wild plant.

Commonly found growing together with the Bird's Nest fern.

Curtains of flowers hanging down from the fork of the tree branches.
