May 2011 - Part II

This is part 2 for May 2011. In this post I shall show two hybrids.

Paph Benkei:
A hybrid that was registered in 2004 from a cross between Paph godefroyae and S.Gratrix. It could easily be mistaken to be godefroyae. Round flower with burgundy streak and dots over cream base. I reckon this clone should be around 60% S..Gratrix and 40% of it from godefroyae. The shape is strongly influenced by S.Gratrix. The NS and DS are 66 and 40 mm respectively.

Paph Yang-Ji Apple:
This is a primary hybrid between two multi florals. Yang-Ji Apple is a relatively new primary cross between Paph. anitum and Paph. philippinense. Dark flowers, with an almost black dorsal and dark maroon petals. The flower can be very variable and can take the form of either parent. However, the dark dorsal of anitum is generally dominant in most of the crossings with anitum.
This clone has 3 flowers. The length of the petal is 19 cm long, DS is 52 mm and petal is 10 mm across.

May 2011

Folks,

These are the first sets of flowers for May to share.

Paph godefroyae fma leucochilum 157-3
This is the second bloom. Dark burgundy tessellation/markings over light cream base, clear spotless pouch and well balance between the dorsal and petals. The NS and DS measure 80 and 52 mm respectively.

Paph godefroyae fma leucochilum 5009-7.
Almost complete marking across the whole flower. Fairly large flower with burgundy streaking markings over light cream base and clear pouch. The NS and DS measure 84 and 46 mm respectively.

Paph godefroyae fma leucochilum AP68-2.
This is the second bloom that flowered in 26 months. A very wide "roof" (dorsal sepal) with marking across the whole round flower. Burgundy streaking markings over light cream base The NS and DS measure 60 and 50 mm respectively.

Paph godefroyae fma leucochilum 392-3.
This is the third plant to bloom that flowered in 26 months. Burgundy streaking markings over light yellow base. A rather disappointed bloom despite of the nice parents. The NS and DS measure 55 and 38 mm respectively.

Paph godefroyae fma leucochilum 136-2.
Flowers from this crossing produce nice round and balanced shape. An average flower with burgundy streaking markings over light cream base and clear pouch. The NS and DS measure 58 and 36 mm respectively.

April 2011

Here are a mixture of blooms to share.

Paph niveum:
A plant frown from flask and bloomed in less than 2 years. Round shape, small purple dots on white base. The plant is still small and the leaf span is between 6 to 8 cm.

Phrag pearcei:
Phrag is short form for Phragmipedium. They are native to Peru and Ecquador. This compact plant has deep green grassy appearance and clumps easily. This plant was bought as a single growth locally and has grown to about 10 heads. The flowers are about 6 cm in size and are borne on spike of about 20 to 30 cm in height. It is a sequential bloomer and each flower can last a few weeks. Fairly easy to grow and it is one of Phrags that could tolerate the warm weather here. You can grow them sitting on a tray of water or alternatively you can grow them in SH (semi-hydro) by allowing some water to stay inside the pot.

Paph Benkei:
A hybrid that was registered in 2004 from a cross between Paph godefroyae and S.Gratrix. It could easily be mistaken to be leucochilum. Round flower with burgundy streak and dots over cream base. The NS and DS are 68 and 48 mm respectively.

Paph concolor:
Here are two forms of concolor. The left flower colour is very dark. This form is from NE Thailand. I decided to call her "Oringina" because the colour is almost towards orange. An uncommon colour for concolor. The right flower is the more commonly colour that you would encounter.

Paph godefroyae fma leucochilum:
A nice round flower with burgundy tessellations over the light cream base.

March 2011

This is a follow up to the flowers that were posted last month. Out of the many that are in bloom now, I have chosen 8 for your viewing pleasure. A couple of nice clones. Other than 136-4 and 155-5, the other 6 are all first bloom.

Paph godefroyae fma leucochilum 512-1 - This is the first bloom from a seedling that was bought a year ago. A very well marked and dark red tesselation over the whole round flower. The photo on the right shows the back of the flower. Flower size is not large and hope the subsequently could be better off than the first bloom. The NS and DS measure 68 and 47 mm respectively.

Paph godefroyae fma leucochilum AP68-1 - This is the first bloom that flowered in 26 months. A very wide "roof" (dorsal sepal) with marking across the whole round flower. Fairly large flower with burgundy streaking markings over light cream base The NS and DS measure 86 and 52 mm respectively. During the March OSSEA Table Display, This plant was placed under the Paph species section. It was neck to neck with 3559-6 but judges finally decided on this flower.

Paph godefroyae fma leucochilum 3559-6 - This is the first bloom that flowered at about the same time with the sibling 3559-5. You can look at both of them and compare the difference. Burgundy streaking markings over light cream base with nice and spotless pouch. The NS and DS measure 86 and 52 mm respectively.

Paph godefroyae fma leucochilum 3559-5 - This is the first bloom. It is the biggest among the 6 siblings that have flowered. The shape is somehow different from the other sibling which are round in shape. However, this clone has a NS of 104 mm. An extra large for this species/form. It is sad that the shape is not so nice and slightly flexed. Burgundy spottings over light cream base. The NS and DS measure 104 and 45 mm respectively.

Paph godefroyae fma leucochilum 155-5 - This is the second bloom. This was one of the parents that made the cross for 157. Dark burgundy markings all over light cream base. Another crossing that have been producing dark, well marked and round f1ower. Flower 157 inherited the features of this parent. The NS and DS measure 75 and 50 mm respectively.

Paph godefroyae fma leucochilum 157-7 - This is the first bloom from a crossing which have been producing large (>75 mm) and round flowers. Burgundy markings over light cream base. Clear spotless pouch. The NS and DS measure 82 and 50 mm respectively.

Paph godefroyae fma leucochilum 136-4 - This is the second bloom. Burgundy markings over light cream base. It is not a large bloom but shape is round with wide dorsal sepal. The NS and DS measure 68 and 40 mm respectively.

Paph godefroyae 107-3 - This is the first bloom from a cluster of 3 heads. It has a narrow and long and tesellated markings on the leaves. The flower has very dark red marking over cream base. The damage at the bottom of he petals were the result of mealy bugs attack. The NS and DS measure 52 and 34 mm respectively.

Vital statistics of the plant is as follows:
  • Leaf span is between 60 to 80 mm.
  • NS and DS are 88 and 50 mm respectively.

OSSEA December 2010 Table Display

Paph godefroyae fma leucochilum MK436-11:
Another off the season bloom for brachys. The NS of the flower is 90 mm across and the longest leaf span is 150 mm long. A relatively huge flower in comparison with the flower. As this is the first bloom, the subsequent flower potentially could be bigger.
This plant came in first in the Paph species section.
