Paph godefroyae alba

The pick of the litter from a flask about 18 months ago. Thick cream white twin flowers. The well marked and light mottled leaf span from this plant is about 8 cm long

A beautiful sequential hybrid

This plant was given as a seedling about 3 years ago. Since then it has four growths in it. The first bloom started when the plant was about 2 years old. It is growing in SH (semi-hydro) with about 1 cm of water in the pot.
Like one of her parents, this sequential hybrid first bloom started in early November 2009 and it is still throwing out new flower bud after the older bloom has withered off.
A word of caution: not all paphs will thrive well in SH.

Paph godefroyae and niveum October 2009

Paph godefroyae fma leucochilum TR155-8 - open form, nice shape and markings with very clear pouch. The NS and DS are 72 mm and 40 mm respectively.

Paph godefroyae fma leucochilum TR184-4 - nice markings with spotless pouch. The NS and DS are 60 and 40 mm respectively.

Paph godefroyae fma leucochilum TR184-3 - not a great clone, just a representative of the species.

Paph niveum TN4282-2 - a good sized niveum with fine spotting. NS is 65 mm.

Paph fodefroyae fma leucochilum DM170 - the 3rd flower from this plant. The plant suffered some stress after it carried the pod last year. The flower is not big (NS 55 mm and DS 40 mm)but it has very good markings and round shape.
It is starting to put up new shoots. This clone was crossed with another DM145 with pretty good results. The flasks have been deflasked and will see what will be the outcome. The g

OSSEA September 2009 Table Display

Paph godefroyae fma leucochilum MK436-6 - The 6th clone to flower from as flask that was deflasked on Sept 2006. This cross consistently produces large flower, good pigmentation over cream base and very clear pouch. The NS of the flower is 77 mm.

Paph Kiryu 1989 - A cross between Paph armeniacum and Pah godefroyae that was made by a Japanese grower in 1989.
This is the second clone to flower from a seedling that was bought during last year' s Singapore Garden Festival (July 2008). A nice hybrid for those who is unable to grow Paph armeniacum locally. The yellow colour from armeniacum is dormant in this hybrid as in many crosses that has armeniacum parentage in it.
The NS of this flower is 105 mm and DS is 45mm with fine brown marking across the the petals and sepal. The flower size is not very far from the previous clone which had a NS of 110 mm.

OSSEA July 2009 Table Display

PaphMuriel Constance. This is a nice hybrid between Greyi (godefroyae x niveum) and bellatulum. Very fine spots across the whole flower. The back of the flower is just as spectacular. An easy to grow hybrid to grow and flower. Even if it does not flower, the markings on the leaves are just as beautiful. This plant was grown from flask and it is the 2nd time that the plant is flowering.

The above shows the Paph that came in 3rd in the overall placing for the show. This plant was grown from flask. The first time that this plant flowered was last year and this the 2nd time that the plant is blooming. The NS of the flower is 84 mm. Extremely dark pigmentation across the whole flower over a cream base.

The above show was held earlier this afternoon at the Function Room, Botany Centre, SBG. Today's talk was "Knowing your Orchid" - Renanthera and its hybrids by Mr. Syed Yusof Alsagoff. Mr Alsagoff is one of the pioneer orchid growers in Singapore. It was an interesting talk and the audience have a good insight and tips on orchid hybridization.

4 plants were brought to the Table Display - 2 leucochilums, niveum and Muriel Constance. There were several hybrids in today's show so the judges decided to split the Paphs into species and hybrids.

Two plants were placed in the show. Paph leucochilum TR136-1 was judged the best Paph under the Paphiopedilum Alliance while Paph Muriel Constance was judged as the best hybrid. The Paph also came in third for the overall placing. The above are some of the pictures of the plants from the Table Display.

Close up view of June 2009 flowers.

"Tom, Dick and Harry" or "Fu Lou Shou" - these three nice plants bloomed about the same time. The centre has very dark colour and pigmentation whereas the left and right flowers are round and with nice tessellations.
Above them are the individual close up view of the flowers that were posted earlier.
