 Vascostylis Pine Rivers.

A vandaceuos orchid which comprise of the Ascocentrum, Rhynchostylis and Vanda. Over thirty  compact flowers on one strong, erect inflorescence; sepals and petals deep grape violet; lip slightly darker grape violet and  texture glistening.

Phalaenopsis maculata

 Phragmipedium Grande
   A  slipper that are found in Southern Mexico to Peru..  A primary hybrid between  caudatum and longifolium. wo large open flowers  and 2 buds on a single inflorescence. Sepals and petals light yellow, veined olive green. Pouch light brown, splashed brown on the upper surface.

Brassavola x Laelia purpurata 'Morning Glory'. 

A primary hybrid of the genus Brassolaelia. Best of both parents, with the nice viened purple lips.

 Phal ambionensis x Phal cornucervi x Phal micholitzii.

 Vanda foetida.

 Cattlianthe Candy Ball 'Happy Child'.

A primary hybrid between Cattleya and Guarianthe. 5 well spread and upright crimson colour flowers on a single inflorescence. Plant exhibited by Gardens By the bay.

  Dendrobium phlox.

A  species that can be very variable in colours. The plant exhibited by Gardens By the bay was  a yellow form.

 

 

Thunia Gathonenis.

This genus is  totally  restricted  to the region of southeast Asia. Only only 6 known species and a handful of hybrids. These bamboo-like orchids  are deciduous in the winter months.  Each flower has the classic orchid blossom shape, as in the genus Cattleya, and is purple/pink. The lip is tubular, with a broad trumpet shape and is lightly frilled with many striations on its inner surface. The inner surface is also covered in yellow-orange tufts and ridges (lamellae) – an aid to ensure pollination. The remaining flower segments are very similar in shape and length and usually are a much paler color than the lip itself, but can be edged in dark purple/pink. The plant exhibited by Gardens By the Bay is a hybrid between majorensis and winniana.

Chiloschista lunifera.

A leafless orchid that is mounted on a drift wood and drapped with live spanish moss. This was awarded as Best Display Plant.

Chiloschista - Leafless Orchid

Chiloschista is a genus of orchid, comprising slightly more than 20 species. It is native to South East Asia. Unlike the majority of orchids, these plants essentially have no leaves. The photosynthesis activity of the plant is performed by its aerial roots.

The roots must be exposed to sunlight and cannot be potted.  They are usually mounted on driftwood, cork or tree branch. They prefer high humidity with good air flow. Cultivated plants should be kept moist while they are actively growing.  The misting of the plant should be allowed only slight drying allowed between watering.

These are the photos that show the flowers from the two plants that flowered one after another.
Plant #2 has 2 flowers whereas Plant #3 has only 1 flower.
Needless to say, Flower #3 is much bigger than the two flowers from Plant #2.

 This photo was taken at 6 AM. The sepals are fully stretched.

 This photo was taken 12 hours later at 6 PM. The sepals have  curled inwards.

Coryanthes bruchmuellerii

They are found in Venezuela, Brazil and Peru as a large sized, hot to warm growing epiphyte. The extremely large fragrant flower weighs about 100 gm. It is one of the heaviest flowers in the orchids world and the largest in this genus.

 The bud measure 100 mm from top to bottom and 65 mm across. Photo taken 2 days before the flower opens.
